According to the 2008 American Cancer Society Facts and Figures, in the U.S., cancer accounts for 1 out of every 4 deaths or 1,500 deaths, per day. Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the U.S., exceeded only by heart disease.

OptumHealth’s cancer solutions address the many aspects of cancer care and treatment, delivering quality outcomes while mitigating costs for the payers and their clients or members. We offer three programs for clients which include, the Cancer Resource Services Network Access Only program, the Cancer Resource Services Program (CRS) and the Cancer Support Program (CSP).

OptumHealth’s cancer programs partner with patients and their providers to help in a variety of ways including:

1. Network access to high quality cancer centers at a discount through the CRS Network Access Only program for clients with case management staff
2. Short-term treatment decision support and education from experienced OptumHealth cancer nurses along with network access and discounts through the CRS program
3. Comprehensive cancer support from highly experienced cancer nurses supported by a team of medical oncology directors and social works to support the patient throughout their cancer journey including network access and discounts as well as clinical trial reviews, second opinions and symptom and side-effect management through the CSP program

The CRS and CRS Network Access Only program focus on the approximately one-third of all new cancers that are considered uncommon or complex and typically cost tens of thousands of dollars to treat. These types of cancer are more appropriately treated at high volume and high quality cancer centers. All cancer solutions include access to the Optum cancer Center of Excellence (COE) network facilities; currently 30 centers throughout the United States. Clients using the Optum contracts obtain:

• An Average contract savings of 20% - 40% off of the billed rate from negotiated discounts off of inpatient, outpatient, surgical and facility services Clients integrating Optum cancer nurses with their network solution typically achieve greater savings, due to the experience and expertise of the Optum nurses, which focus exclusively on workign with cancer patients.

The CSP program is a comprehensive program not only providing network access to CRS COE’s, but also comprehensive support when patients and their families need it most.
